Fostering Citizenship on Higher Education: The Experience of the University of Sao Paulo

Invited Symposium: Learning Ethics on Higher Education The University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, created a new campus (East USP) following the premises of increasing institutional responsibility in terms of the ethic and moral education of its students, a concern with citizenship and the search for solutions to social problems. To reach this goal, it has adopted a curriculum based on Project Oriented Problem-Based Learning (POPBL) that fosters students from all areas of knowledge to undertake collective social investigation projects in the nearby community, developing studies related to themes like: Citizenship and Inequalities; Quality of Life and Spatial Occupation; Technology and Society; Values and Prejudice; Pleasure and Diversity; University, Knowledge and the Community; Globalization, Local Cultures and Education; and Health and Well-Being.
